Exfoliation Translation
Chemical vs. Mechanical Exfoliation
Every facial at Method Medspa offers skin exfoliation some way, either chemically or mechanically or both. Keep in mind when we say “chemicals” we’re talking skin-safe solutions. This post breaks down the difference between these techniques.
What is exfoliation and why is it essential to healthy, glowing skin?
Exfoliation is the removal of older skin cells, built-up product, and/or vellus hair from the outermost layer of skin. Exfoliation improves skin appearance and texture by removing the dry and dull skin cells and improving blood circulation. It makes skin brighter and softer, evens out texture and tone, and helps to prevent and treat breakouts. All skin types can benefit from some type of exfoliation.
Chemical Exfoliation
Chemical exfoliation means using skin-safe chemicals (typically acids or enzymes) to remove unhealthy or dull skin cells. We can chemically exfoliate with over-the-counter products that contain AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids like glycolic and lactic acids) and BHAs (beta-hydroxy acids like salicylic acid). At Method, you might experience AHAs or BHAs with the Glysal step in your Hydrafacial, or with some of our favorite products from ZO Skin Health: Oil Control or Complexion Renewal Pads, Dual Action Scrub, Exfoliation Accelerator, and Enzymatic Peel.
Chemical peels are a deeper form of exfoliation for the skin that produce faster results than over-the-counter chemical exfoliants. This deeper penetration can result in some sloughing to reveal bright, smooth skin underneath. At Method, we love the ZO Stimulator Peel and the Perfect Derma Peel.
Physical Exfoliation
Physical exfoliation means using tools to achieve a smoothing and brightening effect. These tools can include things like the the tiny round crystals or diamond tip use in microdermabrasion. It also includes products like the ZO Exfoliating Polish- a client favorite. Depending on the type of tool, the exfoliation may be quite gentle and painless (dermaplaning), or deep and impactful (microneedling).
How should I be exfoliating?
Your provider will consult with you on the best procedures and products for your skin type, schedule, and financial goals. Most clients at Method benefit from a combination of both chemical and physical exfoliation to maintain healthy, balanced skin. Schedule a METHOD consult to work on a plan with your provider.
